MIAMI -- Fear of the damage that powerful Hurricane Matthew may cause prompted two college football postponements Thursday, and had the NFL plotting just-in-case scenarios for games scheduled in Tampa and Miami this weekend.A pair of college games set to be played Saturday -- LSU at No. 18 Florida, as well as Charlotte at Florida Atlantic -- were postponed. The Tigers-Gators game that was scheduled for Gainesville is off indefinitely, and the Charlotte-FAU game scheduled for Boca Raton is now tentatively planned to be played Sunday.Saturday nights game that has No. 23 Florida State visiting No. 10 Miami remains on as scheduled, though officials remain somewhat cautious. Also, the Georgia at South Carolina game has been pushed from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said on his radio show.A major issue with games in Florida this weekend isnt the weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday, because those days look to be generally fine around the state. Its whether police, first responders and other key personnel needed at football games that draw massive crowds will be deployed to assist in areas that will take the brunt of Matthews wrath. This is a potentially catastrophic event for the state, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said, and public resources need to be employed where theyre most needed.Matthew has now prompted four major college football postponements this weekend. Besides the Florida and FAU home games, and the Georgia-South Carolina game, it was decided earlier in the week that the Tulane at Central Florida game -- first scheduled for Friday -- will be played next month. Also in Virginia, Massachusetts game at Old Dominion has been moved up a day to Friday night.Florida State originally planned to fly to Miami on Thursday evening; the Seminoles remained home and now plan to make the trip south Friday. Miami moved into its home-game hotel ahead of schedule, in part because its campus was closed and classes were canceled. Our hope is to be able to play at Hard Rock Stadium, Miami athletic director Blake James said. Obviously, things can happen that prohibit that. The NFL hopes to play at Hard Rock Stadium as well -- the Miami Dolphins are to host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The metro Miami area was not taking the brunt of the storm, and sunshine is even in Fridays forecast. But there are things to assess before deciding if the FSU-Miami and Titans-Dolphins games can absolutely be played, namely if its safe for fans to be on the roads and whether police departments have the resources to simultaneously handle football crowds and storm-devastated areas. As always, our overriding concern is for public safety and not doing anything that will divert important resources away from communities that may be in distress, the NFL said in a statement. Consistent with that, we are conducting contingency planning for the Tennessee at Miami game as well as the Tampa Bay at Carolina game.Tampa Bay is to play at Carolina on Monday night.Resources were also a factor in South Carolina, where Gov. Nikki Haley said state troopers needed to be free this weekend for hurricane detail -- not Gamecocks football. The 100 to 200 troopers that they usually request or need would not be available to them, Haley said. It wasnt immediately clear if the game now being on Sunday would change her stance. The Miami Heat got out of town on Wednesday for a couple days of practice in Houston, in advance of their next preseason game in Kansas City on Saturday. You always err on the side of caution, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. You cant leave late in these things. Its one of the few natural disasters that happen that you have an opportunity to plan for.The Florida Panthers practiced Thursday morning, and coach Gerard Gallant said he and his wife were riding the storm out at home after stocking up on provisions.Lots of peanut butter, jam, lots of bread, Gallant said.FAU said it will assess after the storm clears if Sunday is a viable option to play. For now, FAUs football team is staying across the state in Tampa, well out of Matthews path. FAUs volleyball team practiced at Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers on the southwest side of the state, which was a hurricane haven of sorts.FGCUs on-campus arena was designated by state officials to become a shelter. Many residents from the Atlantic side of the state evacuated west, and the vast majority of hotels on that side of the state were filled to capacity. So FGCUs mens and womens basketball teams took Thursday off, with plans to practice elsewhere Friday. Some other cancellations and postponements announced Thursday:- South Carolinas mens soccer game in Miami against FIU, scheduled for Saturday, was pushed back to Monday because of travel concerns.- The Tampa Bay at Florida NHL preseason game, which was scheduled for Thursday and postponed earlier this week, will not be made up.- Fridays East Coast Hockey League preseason game in Estero between the Orlando Solar Bears and Florida Everblades was canceled.- In womens golf, this weekends stop on the Symetra Tour, the IOA Golf Classic near Orlando, was canceled. Next weeks season finale in Daytona Beach remains on as scheduled.- A North American Soccer League match between the Carolina RailHawks and Fort Lauderdale Strikers in Cary, North Carolina, was pushed from Saturday to Sunday. Thousands of fans at Mosaic Stadium will be cozying up to each other in an effort to stay warm in chilly temperatures and block the Prairie wind that locals say can knock your socks off. Scarpe Tn Donna . -- In a span of seven Washington Redskins offensive plays, Justin Tuck sacked Robert Griffin III four times. HARTFORD, Conn. -- Before Connecticut freshman guard Crystal Dangerfield took to the court Monday night against Ohio State, she needed a quick pep talk from sophomore teammate Katie Lou Samuelson. In what would be just her second career start, and her first in front of a large UConn home crowd, Dangerfield caught a case of nerves and began to feel overwhelmed.Samuelson, who started 21 games during her freshman season, kept her advice to Dangerfield simple: Do what youve been doing all season.I told her that the nerves were going to be there, you need that adrenaline to get you forward, Samuelson said. I just told her play how she can play, and shes been doing that.Dangerfield, able to calm the nerves, contributed a strong performance in the Huskies eventual 82-63 victory over the Buckeyes -- UConns 85th straight win. With a starting five that includes Kia Nurse, Gabby Williams, Napheesa Collier and Samuelson, Dangerfield is not expected to lead the team statistically or vocally. Nor does she have to. In 34 minutes of play, the freshman guard totaled eight points, five assists and three rebounds.Dangerfield began molding her role on the team in just the second game of the season when, against then No. 2-ranked Baylor, she led all UConn players with an electric 19-point performance, shooting 8-of-14 from the field.Currently, Dangerfield serves as a kind of anchor, charged with commandeering the dominant UConn offense while finding moments to make plays for herself. While Dangerfield wont light up the stat sheet on a consistent basis -- not yet anyway -- her contributions are always timely. Her ability to knock down a big shot, draw a charge or find an open player on the break has proved significant. Her strength is her court vision and finding open teammates on the floor.Shell make some tough shots, she loves the runners. She does stuff where you go, Wow I didnt think she could do that, Huskies coach Geno Auriemma said.Dangerfield, who has started in place of sidelined senior guard Saniya Chong (concussionlike symptoms), said she is slowly adjusting and becoming more comfortable with the starting role.Instead of coming innto a tone that has already been set, I like being able to now set the tone for myself, Dangerfield said.dddddddddddd I feel like the game comes better to me when I start.According to teammates such as Samuelson, Dangerfields consistency and growth will come with experience. Samuelson said she has been impressed with Dangerfields performance.Shes been really good, Samuelson said. I think shes trying to embrace that role of coming in to be that point guard, especially when Saniya is out and the fact that we lost [Moriah Jefferson, to graduation]. Her role is to show that she can be that consistent player to lead the offense and hit a shot when we do need it but also make the right passes. I think she showed that today.Dangerfield said she wants to be more active on the floor, adding that she believes her role as a starter is threefold: go and make plays, dont be tentative, be in attack mode.I think Im starting to make that jump as the game goes by, Dangerfield said.Dangerfields progression has not come without a few expected growing pains. She has led the team in turnovers in three of the eight games she has played in, including six turnovers against LSU on Nov. 20. On Monday against the Buckeyes, multiple unforced errors due to poor decision-making exposed Dangerfields inexperience. With four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and UConn up by 17 against Ohio State, Dangerfield telegraphed a pass to the left wing that was deflected easily out of bounds -- invoking an audible sideline reaction from Auriemma. Less than a minute later, an OSU full-court press caused Dangerfield to send an errant pass that sailed over the head of Nurse and out of bounds.I would say shes comatose sometimes out there, said Auriemma, who added that Dangerfield is still far from the potential he has seen daily. She is way better than that -- slowly but surely, we are getting there with her. Were trying to get her to be way more involved. The more she gets involved, as time goes on, shes going to be really good.
